This past Thursday would have been Malcolm X’s 80th birthday. Unfortunately, due to circumstances that I still don’t fully understand, our friend and brother is not with us physically today. I often wonder what would be Brother Malcolm’s words to African people in America today. What would he have to say about the horrible condition of our inner cities, our contentment with substandard education, our pacified theologies, our high levels of crime and drug abuse. I have a feeling what he would say. He might say that we don’t love ourselves. He might say that we have “integrated” into a society that has taught us to hate ourselves. He might say that we have been duped by another trick of the powerbrokers of our communities. Oh how I sometimes wish that Brother Malcolm was still with us. For me, he exemplified Black manhood in America. He seemed to be as comfortable on the corner as he was speaking before thousands. We need more Black men in this country who are as in tune with their Faith as they are with their community.
Dear Omowale,
I’ve come to realize that the American Government will never recognize you with a holiday on its calendar, but don’t worry – as a Great Ancestor of our people you will always hold a dear place in the heart of Conscience Afrikans. Your life will never be forgotten and your spirit is always with us. Rest easy – your living was not, is not, and shall not be in vain.
We salute you, El-Hajj Malik-El Shabazz!
