Reparations Sunday on Faith In Action

May 2, 2005
By

This morning, Faith In Action welcomed Dr. Raymond Winbush (Director of the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State), Marcus Magwood and Darnyell Tuggle (Criminal Justice Club at Coppin State) and Tyrone Keys (MD Democratic Central Committee).

(from l to r) Dr. Raymond Winbush, Darnyell Tuggle, Marcus Magwood, Tyrone Keys, Myisha Cherry and Heber Brown, III

The topic was reparations and we had a lively discussion about whether or not Black folk in America should get behind the Reparations movement. We also talked about the support (or lack thereof) that the Reparations movement has received from the Black Church.

But now, we’re curious as to what you have to say.

Is reparations the “civil rights” movement of this generation? Will reparations do what is necessary to bridge the equality gap between African Americans and Whites? Or does reparations perpetuate the “victim mentality” of Blacks in America? And why do you think that so many Baltimore Metro clergy are silent on the reparations issue?

Click “comments” below and tell the world how you feel about reparations!

I disagree with the idea of reparations. The reason being is that it undermines completely the efforst and accomplishments that AA have accomplished in the past that has furthered the advancement of the black race and community. And as AA we should stop banging our heads against a door that has remained closed for hundreds of years. I do believe at this point that many people, doctors, professors, ministers, pastors, and etc., have spoken up and written about reparations. And where are we still??? The best thing to do would be to stop banging our heads up against a door that is not being answered and use a different one that will open and and allow us to be celebrated for our efforts. And for those of you who feel that reparations is owed to use because the gov’t has given it to so many other people of different races, the idea of “well they got paid so should we” is a childish idea that should be dieregared and left to the minds of children. The United States gov’t will never offer reparations for an act they do not acknowledge even now. To futher clarify that statement, yes they so admit that slavery happened and as did the mass rape, murder, and the dehumanization of a race of people. But they do not acknowledge who built this country on their backs. They do not acknowledge who started this country and helped to create it and build it into the powerhouse that it is today. If you go into the White House and see the pictures of the founders of America hanging on the walls, you will not see a black face among them. You will not see a slave tragically depicted up on the wall of the House where slavery was condoned and our people where thought to be less than human. So what we should do is stop beating down the idea of reparations and move on to things that will help our community be more than what it is now.

I completely disagree with you sister. I wonder if you discredit the Jews, Native Americans, and Japanese Americans for receiving reparations too? Excluding the Native Americans, both the Japanese and Jewish people are excelling in America. And it’s not about “banging our heads up against a wall” – it is about seeking justice for our ancestors. It’s about making sure that our children see us fighting for something that we believe in. Black Americans these days don’t fight for anything unless they are personally affected by it. Our children are blatantly disrespected, our communities are in shambles, and our religious leaders (for the most part) are silent – we look like punks to our kids and we’re raising them to be punks too. Where are the children of the ’60′s? Where are the former Black Panthers? Where are the Deacons of Defense? Were they just fictional characters that I read about in my history book? Why are Africans in America so afraid to fight for what’s right! King and Malcolm got assasinated and all of ya’ll got scared? Somebody has got to be willing to fight and die if need be for what is right before God. Until reparations is secured for my people; I refuse to pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. I leave that to you sell out, Uncle Tom, Handkerchief-head Black folk.

I agree with what one of the guests said on the show. Clergy in Baltimore are silent on the reparations issue because Jakes, Eddie Long, and Paul Morton haven’t given them the okay to talk about it. Reparations is too “Black” of an issue for Baltimore clergy – especially the clergy who have white folks in their congregation. They would never say anything to offend them. So ya’ll should have Jakes on the show and get him to support reparations – then Baltimore clergy would follow; just like they follow him down to MegaFest every year.

I’ve read all three comments and this is how I feel about the issue of reparations. Is is something that is owed to Africans in America but America is not going to give it to us. We have fought against racism for years and yet it still exist. America has been ignoring the black communities for years on end and what does anybody think will make them listen to us now? Well those of you who think America will listen to us now about reparations take note is has not happended and it will not happen. I agree with all three comments. We do deserve it but they, they meaning America, is staunchly against it and choosing not acknowledge that we deserve it. And as far as the clergy goes, we need to purge our churches and start over with strong black men and women who will stand up for the black community regardless if what they are standing up for is politicaly correct. We need more people like Dr. Martin, and Malcolm X, but which one man or woman will come to the front of the line and lead us, when our leaders are ALWAYS killed. Except for those who create a scandal that is. And in today’s society when blacks have good jobs, they can go to any school of their choosing, and they can do majority of the things that whites can do in this world, who will stand up and risk the life that they have just to free the rest of the community? Most of us are eating good and living good because people like Dr. Martin and Malcom X have fought for us, but yes we have gotten soft and it shows. I for one will not lead and risk my life for a community that will not follow me.–>

reparations is commericalised so much that it’s good that we have a another way to unwind the mind like the bible where god has carefully planned for us or provides . I grew up as a outsider to my movements with that I felt important because something more was right where I was born and razed but it didn’t stop me from filling some dreams here and beyond , I am a gift but felt it was invaded by capitialism being liberated by stars so I felt I was a protector of some kind of the free world through self beleif not . But in the system won instead revelutionary ideas and movements or just plain old revolutions , injustice was served and I paid the difference , god won me over double fold but government just ruin my life without understanding for defence of reality and truth , they are lawful drug pushers who discriminate , I give thank to nature and Jesus cause we all got learn the easy way .

Not only will these floor mats guard your carpet from mud and outdoors debris, but you won’t have to worry about meals stains, drink spills or dust from tools. Your car will appear a whole lot far better with the floor mats, even though defending it at the identical time. The sort of protection that would work best for a truck that is currently being applied for large duty work would be the thick rubber floor mats. These rubber mats resist stains extremely well, and are not difficult to clean; they can be rinsed with h2o hose as extended as you clear them while spills are contemporary. Right after hosing them down and letting them air dry or drying them with a towel you are all set to place them back inside your truck.
