Popular, community activist preacher, Pastor Willie Wilson of the Union Temple Church in Southeast D.C. recently caused an uproar with comments made about homosexuals during his sermon a couple of weeks ago. Pastor Wilson credited homosexuality as being a factor in the destruction of the Black family.
Faith in Action has obtained a clip of the sermon from Washington Blade so you can hear it for yourself.

Do you agree with Pastor Wilson’s comments?
Being that Pastor Wilson is a lead organizer of the Millions More Movement; do you think that his comments will discourage the “millions” of homosexual African Americans in this country from attending the weekend of events?

I think that Pastor Wilson is right to speak on the topic of homosexuality. However, I thought that his sermon was very distasteful. He referred to the two teenagers as being “ugly”. I think he should teach his son not to call people ugly. God made all of us, and we are beautiful in HIs sight. He also went too far into discussing the things that lesbians and gays do. No one wants to hear about them using “grease on their butts”, etc. I think he should apologize for using such language.
The truth hurts. I cheer my brother pastor for his fortitude. We cannot change what the bible says to make sinners happy in their sin. If we did we would not fulfill our calling.
There is no doubt that he is right. The reality is that it is an issue that continues to hurt our community and we refuse to talk about it. We sweep it under the rug and act like it doesnt exist.
The problem is that we have to many brothers in the Pulpit who are either gay or bi-sexual. I was talking about homosexuality one day and after a church a member came up to me and said, “that sounds good rev., but how come we continue to send money to this convention and that convention and they have known homosexuals in leadership?”
I really couldnt say anything.
My wife and I got into it the other day because I dont believe Gay Groups should be a part of the Million Man March anyways. If gays go, fine. Once you put them in leadership that keeps a lot of people from participating.
We have to find away of discussing this issue without crushing people. There are many gay and lesbian African Americans living in DC metro. This makes it an excellent place for us to approach this issue in a forum between the Black Church and the Black gay community. I have been Baptist all my life; Rev. Wilson sermon is no different from any sermon I have heard dealing with homosexuality. The bottom line is, are we here to hurt or to help?
The issue for me is if I sleep around on my wife, is it a less sin than being gay. Sin is Sin. More than to often homosexuality becomes the ultimate sin, the one that will definitely “sin” you to hell. If the church wants to start addressing homosexuality, stopping hiring all of those flaming gay musicians, and we all know we either have one or have seen one perched upon on a Hammonds organ. And what about those gay pastors we know? Those of us who have been preaching for sometime know they exist and have existed. If you have not paid attention, check out the next convention or watch BET on Sunday mornings.
I agree with you to a degree, but are there no varying degrees of sin. Is murder the same as say lying?
Sin is missing the mark?We all sin. Homesexuality in my opinion is a sin, but the ultimate sin is failing to accept Jesuw Christ as Lord and SAvior. Is there an unforgivable sin?
The problem with homosexuality has never been whether it is a sin or not. Nor has it been to what extent is the sin. The problem with homosexuality is, hwo can one serve two masters. There has never been any question if it is a sin, but in recent days the Body of Christ has been deceived and some even turned over to a reprobate mind.
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. Romans 1:24-28
We don’t here enough preached on this text these days but one great historian has said “If one does not know history, they are destined to repeat it.” Afetr much observation I have found two problems you see in most churches (with the exception of a few non denominational churches that have ministries to meet these specific needs. See http://www.totalgrace.org). One problem is the apathetic church. They turn a deaf ear to the situation and neither address it nor confront it. In these churches you are likely to see homosexuels, fornicators, liers, ect… in leadership postions. But we serve a Holy God and you cannot serve Him in filth. On the other hand we have the authoritative church. This church preaches sin until they are blue, in the face they have no tolerence for sin or the backslider. But the Bible records that God is married to the backslider. Instead of preaching the word and letting the Holy Spirit convict and change they attempt to be junior Holy Spirits and change them for God. He dosen’t need any help.
So as to how I feel about the comments, I beleive they were totally out of line and out of place. For him to go into such detail and the extent to which he did was totally unneccassry. We are to be Christians and Christ did everything in love and so should we. The greatest problem now is that they can’t find any peace in the homes or in the church so they find comfort among those that are like them. We need to make the church a more condusive place of change and restoration. We are not called to be judges and often times because one has “femine characterists or ways” we deem him gay. Let evaluate every situation for that situation. The greatest failure in the church is when you see these young boys who are going astry and the church sits by. Where are all the real men at??? If you are a man and confident in yourself take some of these young men in a non offensive way and teach them the right way to go.
I agree
