SANKOFA
For those of you who are in the Baltimore area, you may be interested in attending a book signing at the Enoch Pratt Central Library featuring Taylor Branch, author of At Canaan’s Edge: America in the King Years, 1965-68. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker (pictured above) strongly recommended that I read Taylor Branch’s books on the Civil Rights Movement and Dr. King. The event starts at 7pm and is free to the public. Copies of Mr. Branch’s book will be on sale for signing following the program.
Another one for the history books. Young Clergy for Social Change (and guests) celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by experiencing the honor of having dinner with Reverend Cecilia Bryant, missionary, educator, and also known as the wife of Bishop John Bryant. “Rev. C” was very engaging, thoughtful, and excited to be surrounded by young Believers who are ready for change and critical dialogue. The conversation was free flowing and yet directed by our desire to learn from her experiences and glean from her wisdom. THE ALMIGHTY continues to blow my mind by ordering my steps in such a way that they intersect with the steps of other enlightened and progressive human beings. Thank you, Rev. C, for making time for us. I am confident that you will receive a return on your investment.
Finally, R.StB. (A YCSC brother) were blessed to be a part of history last Friday. We attended a special meeting of progressive minds all unified on the issue of bringing the violence and blood shed on the streets of Baltimore to an end. I’ll not share too much too soon, but we were in the presence of greatness. One of those in attendance was a man that I have read so much about and who I revere as one of the most prolific and prophetic men in Baltimore, Pastor Vernon Dobson – a man who even after suffering a stroke displays gargantuan strength in regard to his commitment to his community and plans for a better Baltimore. He seemed to be invigorated by the presence of young lions who were serious about shaking things up in the city. I just pray we don’t let him down. Please Lord – keep us focused and unified.
