Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Coretta Scott King who made her final earthly transition this morning. She joins the crowd of sainted ancestors who lived with great purpose and passed on great responsibility to those who follow.

I met Mother King while singing with the Morgan State University Choir. We went to Atlanta to sing during our southern tour one year and she was front and center. Always the guy with camera in hand, I made my way to Mother King after the concert to see if I could get a picture with her, but was denied. She decided to take a picture with the full choir though.

I thank God for her life and her commitment to the cause of justice and equality. My prayer is for those yet breathing. May we locate the courage to challenge injustice, hold government accountable, and become leaders in the spheres of our own influence.

Thank you Mother King for your sacrifice and dedication to the cause for liberation.

When my family and I visited the King Center this past November, I really got a chance to read how important Coretta was to Martin. Quotes from Martin about Coretta lined some of the walls.

It made me think about my wife and how blessed I am to have her in my life. It made me think how important she is to this passion and “calling” that I have. Without her I couldn’t do the things that I do. Though she’s not always in the forefront and at all these meetings/rallies that I attend, we truly are partners in the struggle. I love you, girl!

Alright Heb! Stop getting mushy! You know I take it a pleasure as to sharing this earth with someone such as Coretta. Reflecting on her life and work, it dawned on me that she was having those kids right behind each other, and YET still stood in support and worked along with her husband. Wow, to talk about strength. I guess I have no room to complain, or to say I have not enough time, or I am so busy! She really leaves something for mothers to think about. Her facial expression always looked calm and cool. She is a women of excellent and an excellent role model. Go get your crown Coretta!
