I remember hearing, almost daily, accounts about Darfur in the early 1990’s. Of course I didn’t hear about it through mainstream media and people I talked to, for the most part, had no clue to what I was referring to. I heard about it through talk radio. My father and I talked about it constantly. We were very upset with our countries lack of support. Were we surprised? No! It brought home the bitter truth that some people are judged by the color of their skin.

As I continue to educate myself on this, I really cannot believe that it was during my senior year in high school, going to the prom, and other exciting activities, that persons were losing their lives. It is really sickening. How could I have been so “caught up” in me and being ignorant to the fact that children and adults were losing their lives over their class and color of their skin. Well, I recently purchased Hotel Rwanda, which I really should have “purposed” to see in the movies to support the ratings. I must get better at paying attention to global concerns instead of my own little world. Heb, good writing. Peace

Thanks Keisha. This is just one of those issues that just won’t let me go. In the words of Jeremiah - it’s like fire shut up in my bones.

Hey Tamara,
I’ll have to email you the piece being that the AFRO has taken it completely offline.
Thanks for sharing the Final Call video showing Min. Farrakhan giving his view on the Darfur conflict. I found it very informational, insightful, and of course passionate. I agree with much of his sharing about how the genocide is being portrayed in American media and with his critique questioning the sincerity of some of the national organizations taking the lead on this issue. They were very valid points. I was one of the 5-10% of Africans present at the Save Darfur rally held on the Mall in DC and I was also concerned with the “picture” of the crowd.
Is there a place online somewhere where the Minister continues talking about Darfur in this video (or another video/commentary)? I ask because I watched the whole piece that you shared and I didn’t hear any specific solutions or potential plans for addressing what is going on in Sudan. The analysis was thorough, but the clip didn’t give any suggestions as to what African people in America could be doing right now to address this issue. I fear that if our people continue to analyze what’s going on in Darfur without offering a realistic, manageable, and measurable strategy for action then we are in danger of perpetuating an analgesic character flaw that resides in far too many of our people who are content with radical rhetoric or worse - inconsequential symbolic activity. We’re warned of such behavior in James 2:26 where it says “faith without WORKS is dead.”
I went to the Final Call website and did some digging. I found some of the insightful commentary on Darfur, but failed to locate The Nation’s feasible plan of action? To your knowledge, do you know if The Nation is supporting or implementing a feasible plan that would be attractive to other national organizations. (I feel that it will definitely take a broad coalition of organizations to make a difference on the ground in Darfur.)
