Peace Family.  I have been going at it strong over the past few weeks giving much attention to the political scene in Baltimore.  I know there are other issues in the world of significance happening right now as well – the case of the Jena 6, and the commutation of Kenneth Foster’s death sentence just to name a couple.  But I want to know what has your attention these days.

Speak your mind.  Share your thoughts.  Ask your questions.

Ladies and Gentlemen – the floor is yours.  Comment away!

Yesterday morning, just a lil after 5am on Liberty Heights Ave., a man was shot and killed by Baltimore City Police. He suffered two gun shot wounds, one to the head and the other to the torso. The news said that they confronted the man in a car after a car chase had been reported. They tried to force him out of the vehicle when the struggle began. The news also said that he tried to grab hold of one of their guns and thats when the other officer shot him.

This is the 21st shooting this year that has involved police and the fifth one, out of that number, that has been fatal. Now, I am by no means familiar with these types of situations. I just happened to be reading the news yesterday morning after I learned that the person shot was a relative of someone that I know. But, even to me, there seems to be something missing from this story. Sure, this young man could have very well tried to flee the scene after being told to get out of his car. And he really could have struggled to take a gun from one of the officers. But how likely is it that at 5am in the morning, when there were no witnesses, a young black male was being mistreated by the police. Is it likely that he could have been handled in an inappropriate way and therefore decided to defend hisself.

Like I said, I am not the one to know all that there is to know about police brutality but I think that there is a problem when there are over 20 shootings involving police. Maybe I am looking too far into this but what do you all think??

Police are supposed to protect and serve. They are supposed to bring peace. No person should ever be killed by a police officer–ever! Unless it clearly a case of self defense where there is absolutely no chance that the officer can stop or subdue the perpetrator. Jill Carter tried to warn about this. She always said that mass unnecessary & illegal arrests would turn into more disrespect, harrassment, beatings, and shootings by police. We have to turn this around. It starts at the top with new leadership, not by hiring more police that don’t know understand what they are supposed to do. Stop police killing citizens. Stop citizens killing police. Stop people killing people. Jill Carter for Mayor!

i’m thinking about the shootings in london. what the hell is going on with people who just want to kill each other? it’s as if people have become mercenaries for their own causes, in that they just kill because they want to.

I was a resident of the Washington DC metro region for about 7 years. I visited Baltimore on several occasions. I was disturbed by the sense of nihilism that seemed to pervade the inner city, no different from portions of southern California, and the Bay area where I came from.

I reasoned, how would one feel living in the type of concrete-housing complexes with no yards that I observed in the B-More region? In addition to urban blight, I was amazed at the number of places in the concrete jungles there that were simply abandoned and encased in concrete.

In terms of solving the problem that is rampant in too many of our inner cities, we are loosing the battle. Wards 7 and 8, just a stone’s throw from the Capitol and the White House, are good indications of where we stand. It is amazing to me that our national leaders drive past and away from the problem(s) each day, heading to rich enclaves in North Virginia and Maryland, to cities like Great Falls.

The problem of greed in a capitalist society needs to be addressed. I believe that God put enough resources here to meet the needs of all people. What seems to be missing, is the love and care for our brothers and sisters, of the kind that will lead us the rest of us to help lift those indiviuals up who are in need of a hand.

Today the murder count is 209. How can we stop homicides? How can we unite our brothers and sisters? Somebody tell me a plan and then lets put it together!

You are right on point Nicole. The reality is that there are forces way beyong one persons abilities. Though we must gain POWER. There is a cultural ideology that is pushes being cool. There are forces that want a police state it makes money. Police and the Military spending makes money. We need to put a dent in the Drug Trade by of course teaching about the Criminal Justice system and its strategy of giving and arresting young folk making them Economically Non-viable through being a convicted felon. I hope to see everyone at Jill Carter’s Event, C Miles, Steve Cokely and my event Everyone’s place.

To much attention is focused on politics. Without an economic infrastructure in place our hopes to elect folks who will be committed to “community building” becomes a pipe dream. While the state of Black Baltimore hangs in the balance greater efforts are needed to produce Black institutions which will be dedicated to saving lives and uplifting communities. Our biggest challenges will not come from city hall but lies within our inability to “get along.” We don’t have to agree on everything but we should be able to agree on improving the life chances of our children.

Bro or Sista, Corner of hope. You certainly need to be at my presentation
on the date after the election at Everyone’s Place bookstore. Exactly what you are speaking of I will be addressing. I agree with you and I have worked to connect with organizations that are doing just that. I have been promoting this Black Empowerment Post Election “Detox” Business Opportunity Dailogue. Give me a holla. The problem with the Politicians is that first they do not have the knowledge and then they are only interested in getting a good job. They can not fight for the average person in Baltimore this is why they have abandoned black people. They lack solutions therefore they best plan is to run. I have the best solutions right now.
