Baltimore may ban exposing your Butt

Councilwoman Helen Holton

Councilwoman Helen Holton has introduced a resolution in the Baltimore City Council that would encourage dialogue around the issue of youth wearing sagging pants that sometimes reveals their underwear or worse.

Resolution 07-0329R seeks constructive dialogue on this issue by asking the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, the Police Commissioner, Dept. of Recreation and Parks, and the Baltimore City Youth Commission to provide reports on this issue on October 20, 2007.  At that time, the public will be invited to share their opinions on this as well.

As this Examiner article reports, other cities like Atlanta, Trenton, New Jersey and Delcambre, Louisiana are attempting to address this issue with legislation as well.  So far, the punishments for wearing your pants in this way ranges from a fine and meeting with a life development professional all the way up to 6 months in jail.

As Baltimore will soon be engaging this issue in the public policy arena, I’m curious to know what you think about it.  Should elected officials submit legislation to ban this behavior?  If so, what should the punishment be?  If not, who should address this issue? Finally, with all of the other issues going on in the world, is this issue even worth the general public’s time?

Mannnnnnnnnn!!! Is this what Malcolm and Martin died for? The city elected of Baltimore has abandoned the youth and the citizens of Baltimore. Now you want to put in a law to further hinder young black men of the urban community by stigmitizing them even more. A law should be passed on poverty… Do something about that! I guess we can safely say that politcs has most defentily ruined the city of Baltimore. You are leader alright, you are leading us straight into hell. As far as if it should be punishment? Be for real. As far as who should correct it no one. We must reflect leadership for our young. Not imprisonate them.. So the leaders of Baltimore needs to set better examples instead of being Uncle Tom Negroes! The leaders of the leaders hate you black politicians now that has trickled down to you hating you own… I believe that because no one in thier right minds will think of something as irrelevant as this to plact into law. Ban racism you idiots.

Wow, I am not sure if a “who” can address this but more of a “what”. I am sure there is a sense of self defeat surrounding the people that dress this way. But, creating a law that would produce more police contact would do nothing to address the sense of self defeat these youngsters feel. Councilman C.T. Martin here in the city of Atlanta attempted to create a legal ordinance for the same issue and fortunately it has been put on the back burner. Maybe, we need somemore hands on, street walking, door knocking politicians. I doubt seriously any of the politicians that wish to enact such laws do not make much face to face contact with the youth they potentialy wish to lock up.

You get what you vote for. In in the case of 72% of registered voters in Baltimore who chose not to vote, you voted these folks in by not voting. Now, for the next four years, either quit complaining or become politically responsible. Organize, mobilize, read, learn, and vote. Or, otherwise, shutthef…up!

Well..I received a phone call from CouncilWoman Helen Holton’s office to invite me to take part in the dialog around “sagging pants”..the fact that “sagging pants” is the discription they’re using to put this forum together is rather insulting..Insulting because of the manner inwhich you’re trying to promote change, results in you using offensive language that would promote an emotion that’s not positive..Secondly, you’re choosing that the best way to resolve; social, economic, disempowerment, racism, injustice, unemployment, weightless education, impoverishment, all of which are problems in Our Black Communities, as a means to an end? Well, for me to even consider this as a resolution, I would have to consider that the way of this society looks upon the problems in Our Black Communities as a way to continue to perpetually inforce the same rule: “I’M RULER OVER YOU AND I WILL CONTINUE TO CREATE AND FORCE MY WAY UPON YOU WHILE MAKING YOU BELIEVE MORE IN MY POWER THAN IN YOURSELF”..This language isn’t new, there’s just a more tactical approach to the continuation of enslavement..For what this suggest is that while this existing system proceeds to death, they’ll resume squeezing the life out of Our Black People while they go down on the throne…

I can’t help but to believe in the action of separation from those of the white supremacist society, which is this one, in order for us to have Our Own..It’s easy for them to remain in control of what we do and how we are, when we continue to use their systems as our means of gain..Brothas and Sistas, how do we expect to live in a world that would allow for us and our children to have the peace, contentment, exhortation of love, discipline, respect of self, knowledge of self, and all those realities that we consider daily, if we’re living in direct opposition to what we know is necessary for true living?..I’m sure that we all are attempting to live the abundant, but how abundant can it possibly be when we have to always fight to hold onto the little that “they” allow us to have?..Are we partners of anything in this society, hell no..Are we slaving to maintain what we have, hell yes..If these truths are obvious, not just to our natural eye, but our conscious minds can view that we’re continuing to work to maintain “their” world-order, what is our next move?…

Now, I will go and listen in on at least one of these dialogs, and state my position..In this world, we have to counteract by means of speaking on a moral platform..The balance is created by us being smart about the actions that we take and stand on them…

I hear my brothas and sistas talking about organizing and mobilizing, but I wonder, have we ever considered that the organization and mobilization that’s acceptable, is the kind that’s being used by our opponents?…I’ve witnessed too often where white people always trying to place their hands in Our Revolution..If we’re dealing with Black problems, why are we discussing our moves with “them”?..We have to keep in mind that those who are against our very existence, are the same ones who sit in rooms discussing our destruction (using the notes that they take when we invite them to our meetings)…

Ok – enough militant and activist rant – so what, then, is going to be done about the sagging pants? It’s disgusting.

  6. Chabria on October 31, 2007 at 2:53 pm

Well, as it suggest, it’s a resolution, not a piece of legislation..as of right now, I haven’t received a call back from Helen Holton’s office with dates, times and locations for this discussion..to answer your question as to what will be done about sagging pants, nothing at this time since it’s just a dialogue that she wants to have to possibly make suggestions on what should be done..I believe another question could be asked which is, if there’s is a law against indecent exposure, why aren’t we inforcing the law?..this is a question that came up during a meeting I had with a brotha that works in the City Council Office on yesterday..From what he says, nothing will be done..he feels it’s a waste of time, especially since we have a law in place that would address this..Furthermore, the brotha gave one perspective on why this law isn’t being inforced, “we don’t have enough police to address other crimes, let alone give attention to “sagging pants”…

So perhaps I’ve presented a few things for you to consider…

We all have entered into the realization that there’s a wave of attacks, that through the generation of conscious folk, we have to address one way or the other..One way is to sit and do nothing, another way is to continue to dialogue and do nothing, or just simply nothing at all..The last option is for those who see the world as it is and find it hard to think outside of their realm of existence..For those of us that do at least take the time to think, and do some type of research on problems and issue, we have to ask ourselves, where do I fit in? What is my place in all of what’s going on?..Now for us that know something needs to be done, we have to take some form of action..Right now, it’s up to us to make a decision on how to move in this lifetime..I’m a believer in the Creator of the universe, which consist of all that exist here on earth and in those spaces that we, present day humans, have not defined to the fullest degree..But as a believer in the Creator, I also know that it’s necessary for me to take a position here on earth and in this lifetime..Whether my position is viewed as good, bad, positive, inactive, etc, I have to take my position..I have to choose…

I’ve chosen that the best position is to be completely honest with self, and live up to my God standard which has been created within me..No one else can identify that solely, less I do so..I’m the best knower, next to the Creator, of myself which consist of my wants, desires, needs, joys, happiness, my state of unrest, being dissatisfied, what’s negative, etc..Since this is true, I have to create an answer..Why “wait on God”, when it’s clear to me that I have to make decisions and move?..The Creator has given me life, breath, dominion and power, why wouldn’t I use what I have been given to sustain LIFE?..It wouldn’t make sense…

To say militant or activist, those words are partial to the existence of someone that recognizes the more and searching it out..If we allow for everyone to take dominion over us, we can never subdue our part of the earth or those spaces that have yet to be fully defined…

I don’t know about you brotha, but I’m aware of my sovereignty and I’m fighting to be in control of my own!!!…

    Peace and Blessings
