Skate Park in East Baltimore?

I’ve driven past this billboard for the last month on the way to work and it always strikes me as being extremely curious.  It’s on Greenmount Avenue in East Baltimore (in between North Ave. and Preston) in the middle of an impoverished African American neighborhood. 

A Skate Park is coming to this part of town?  Last night on the way home from the United Workers Association celebration, I couldn’t take it anymore.  I pulled over and took a picture of the sign intending to do more investigation.  This may be a sign of a new influx of people coming to the neighborhood which may also signal a mass relocation of African Americans.  After all – most Black kids in Baltimore don’t ride skateboards – they ride dirt bikes.  Now if the sign said “Dirt Bike Park”, I would react differently….but skateboards?

My initial investigation of this on the Baltimore City Council website didn’t turn up anything, but I’ll keep digging.  If anyone out there knows what’s going on with this project (i.e. who’s funding it, the scope of the park, who submitted the legislation, when it’s scheduled to be completed) let me know.  Thanks. 

Let’s live with our eyes open people.  The ominous clouds of threatening change are hovering over Baltimore’s Black community.
