This sermon got Father Mike removed from his church – the Faith Community of St. Sabina. To their credit, the St. Sabina family is standing with their pastor. Mary Mitchell writes an interesting article in the Chicago Sun-Times about this situation pointing out that Cardinal Francis George moved slow to remove a pedophile priest, but with great haste pushed Father Mike to the side!

I’m of European descent, my grandparents were extremely poor on both sides, they worked hard, didn’t have kids till they could afford them, and lived within their means, now they have money, but still don’t spend everything on stuff they don’t need. I have paid almost entirely for college on my own. Any scholarships I received were based on skills and an academic track record (fostered by two supportive parents). This guy’s taking the congregation’s money by complaining about slavery, thereby making them his slaves. By merely his words, he becomes entitled to the fruits of their labor, and they give him what he’s really after because he says what they want to hear. Sure, maybe he volunteered for this specific sermon, I don’t know, but I’ll bet this is far from the first time he’s made a statement like this, and he’s probably doing quite well, financially. Maybe he received everything from rich family members, and he is just displacing his own guilt to feel better about himself.
