When people ask, "what is the biggest mistake made in the Black Panther Party?" I tell them very clearly that what we did wrong was to take God out of the movement. -Afeni Shakur (Former Black Panther and Mother of slain rapper,Tupac Shakur)
Is Black radio censoring Cynthia McKinney? Absolutely! Black radio is not only trying to box Cynthia McKinney out, to use a basketball analogy, they have effectively undervalued any criticism of Barack “I don’t want any drama” Obama. Tom Joyner nor Michael “what’s wrong with swinging” Baisden have mentioned the sister’s name in the context of the presidential race - at least not to my knowledge, and I, unfortunately, listen to both programs quite a bit. It’s just an epitome of how “dumb down” American Africans really are, and it highlights our preference for style over substance.
I often wonder will Black people ever profoundly recognize the significance of what Kwame Ture and Charles V. Hamilton stated in their book, “Black Power.” That is, true social change will never be truly realized via the political process, but only through our unity as a people. We keep looking externally when all of the answers lie internally. Hotep!
Black Radio in Baltimore is so limited that they force you to go online or ride out in your car to hear a more vast and global opinion of various topics. On Radio One you are censored if you have an opinion that differs from the host of whatever show is on at the time. Between the hours of 3-7 pm, if you choose to listen, the Michael Baisden show continues its propaganda machine(just yesterday, they were proclaiming that the Jena 6 march was the biggest march since the 70’s. Alert cult members: can someone say Million Man??) and if you turn to WHUR the same thing is on. At least Tom Joyner has a news segment and they try to discuss current events. I wont even mention the buffonery of the Steve Harvey show. Sober discussion of sisters such as Cynthia McKinney or Leonora Fulani or others will only be heard on stations such as WPFW or public radio.
The black Janjaweed in America decided early on that Senator Obama is its man. The 95% black American block-vote will not tolerate another black getting any serious attention.
To those blacks who say that Senator Obama, ‘all praises be to Obama’, is black America’s last and only hope, have you forgotten about Colin Powell? General Powell could have been America’s first black president and there are others in the wings? We must allow for other black Americans to have their say. W.E.B. Dubois had Booker T. Washingon, El Hajj Malik el Shabazz had Dr. King…!
Common Sense,
As a follow-up to your bufoonery comment …, Tyler Perry is my man, but can anyone tell me how his comedic television show won an image award?
His latest movie however, The Family That Preys, shows that the man has what it takes to go all the way!
I am deeply concerned that too much of what our youngsters are viewing, even on black television is belitling and degrading. There is not enough subject matter to view that will feed and grow the mind!
