New York Post Publishes Questionable Cartoon

The New York Post has published this cartoon today that that has caused quite a stir in many circles. The editor of The Post released a statement saying that it’s just a parody of recent events and a broad swipe at Washington’s attempt to revive the economy.
Al Sharpton, among others, are wondering if something more sinister is at play here. Given the long history of violent reprisal against people of color for daring to enter the political arena, some question if The Post is sending a coded racial insult with the President of the United States, Barack Obama, as the butt of the joke.
If this is in fact a deliberate attempt to make a statement about President Obama or even something that floated up unfiltered from the subconscious of a man who has been classically conditioned in the ways of White Hegemony, what I can’t say about this is that it is surprising. For many the question wasn’t “if” something like this would happen, but “when.” A man with melanin in his skin sitting in the Oval Office will prove to be too much for some people.
A man with a rifle drives up to the capitol with a “delivery” for Obama and now this?
Buckle up, folks. It’s going to be an interesting 4 years.

Here we go again! First we had the “Drunken Negro Cookie” now we have this cartoon in which the reference and comparence with the president (the face and signatory for the latest stimulus bill) is without question.
Then, when a respected African American leader and former presidential candidate (Rev. Al Sharpton) speaks out on the cartoon for its gutteral racist allusions, he is attacked and labeled an opportunist.
The paper’s insult in comparing the president to a dead primate (The Post does this by publishing the cartoon and defending the artist) begs for a national civil action in response. To associate the president’s language, (after all the stimulus package requires the president’s signature to become law) with two obviously white policemen, one holding a “smoking gun” pointing toward a wounded “chimp” is to say the least incendiary, and at its worst racially coercive. Code words and images are no longer a disguise for “soft prejudice.”

I was offended at this blatant racist cartoon but my feelings have been tempered by the (shabby at best) treatment that Mayor Dixon has suffered by the Obama camp. For those who don’t know, the mayor of Baltimore has been indicted on charges of stealing gift cards and other “trumped up” charges. On Obama’s way to the White House, he stopped in Baltimore but did not in any way, shape, form or fashion, acknowledge Mayor Dixon. Can you imagine having a party at your home but everyone acts as if you don’t exist? Eating your food, drinking your drinks right in front of you?? Rather Obama lets O’Malley and Cummings introduce him. O’Malley? He who was a big Hillary supporter? Okay, he wanted no problems on his way to his inauguration. I’ll give you that one.
Next, he has national people who he wanted to appoint to his cabinet, lie to his face and have to withdraw from consideration to save embarassment. And yet the Obama camp continues to treat Shelia Dixon like dirt by dis-inviting her to this recent meeting of Mayors about the stimulus funds. Who represented Baltimore? What ever your feelings about Ms. Dixon, she has not been found guilty of anything yet. And I have not been a Dixon supporter due to her ties to Gov. O’Malley of Md. That being said, I am getting tired of seeing Obama or his minions treating black people with a lack of respect(I’ll never question anything out of your mouth ever Rev. Solomon!!!). He even distanced himself from the great Bernie Mac, when the Mac man told a few jokes at a fund raiser that some people had a problem with. Never mind the many fund-raisers Bernie Mac had performed for him before.
To add insult to injury, he is the President!!! He won!! He can call the shots!! Mr. President, step up and show some character. Out of basic respect to a black woman, your treatment of Mayor Dixon is very offensive!! She was one of 1st ones here in Maryland to support you. Obama in no way will ever be like Martin or Malcolm or any other men of character. But then again they were not politicians. I’m not defending anyone anymore who does not love his own people.
