Neighbors Gather in Govans for Prayer and Peace

Prayer Circle on York Road

Children, college students, seniors, activists, clergy, community association presidents, and organizers came together as neighbors on Sunday, October 11, 2009 to stand together for peace in our community.

In response to a shooting and murder that transpired a month earlier; people of Faith and conscience decided to assemble at the site where violence sprang forth to show that we are not afraid, that we are together, and to declare our desire for a peace-filled community.

Momentum is growing and there is a movement afoot centered on organizing and mobilizing everyday people in North Baltimore. Beyond the peace walks; ideas are beginning to float around about how we can go to the next step and begin organizing money and resources that will compliment the reality of organized people and engender the type of power that will transform our community.

The peace walks and rallies are great because they create an easy “on-ramp” for those who desire a productive avenue in which to channel their feelings of discontent and peaceful desires. However, this movement recognizes that the rallies are not a means to an end (something that other organizations seem to struggle with), but that the rallies are a healthy outlet and necessary inlet for growth.

Please keep this effort in prayer. Unlike many other progressive, grassroots initiatives; this effort has Faith as a major pillar. People of various Faith traditions and spiritual proclivities are a part of this unified effort and it’s making a difference in North Baltimore City.
