Last Sunday, I decided to attend an Advent Prayer Service sponsored by Pax Christi Baltimore and other associated groups. I’m doing all I can to ensure that I slow down enough during this time of year to embrace the spirit of Advent. This season moves so fast. (It was just Thanksgiving wasn’t it?!) I’ve found that it’s important for me to purposely live at a different rhythm so that I can take it all in – not the commercial aspect of the season, but the miraculous meaning of Christmas for Christians. In addition to reviewing this wonderful Advent Study provided by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove; I decided that attending the above mentioned Advent Prayer Service would be nice as well.
The guest speaker for last week’s worship was Elizabeth McAlister, peace activist and co-founder of Jonah House in Baltimore – a faith-based community which serves as an extension of Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker Movement. I’ve been intrigued by Jonah House over the years and have heard much about their prophetic witness in the community. It was a special treat for me to hear from their co-founder who I might get a chance to know better this Saturday at a day long retreat being held at Jonah House. The Advent Retreat is being sponsored by Murphy Initiative Justice and Peace and has the theme: “Are there prophets of hope in your world? Who are they?” Looking forward to it.
In the meantime, enjoy this video featuring Elizabeth McAlister:
