Freshly made apple/carrot juice
This is the second morning in a row where I’ve had fresh juice with breakfast. My family blessed me with a special gift this year for Father’s Day. Knowing my recent focus on living a holistically healthy and simpler life; they got me a juicer! Earlier this week my wife went to the local grocer and brought back fresh fruits and veggies so that we could try out the new gadget.
We decided on apple juice. She cleaned and sliced the apples while I read the instructions one more time to make sure things were in order. (We mixed red and green apples together upon the recommendation of the recipe book.) We plugged it in, hit the switch and started juicing apple slices one by one. It was actually fun! lol. About midway through the apples, I remembered we had baby carrots in the fridge as well so she grabbed those and we threw them down the chute too. The result was a beautiful pitcher of apple/carrot juice. It was delicious! The book that came with the juicer suggested that we not store the juice, but drink it right away to take advantage of the nutrients. We drank half of it yesterday and I finished it off this morning.
As my wife was cleaning the juicer, I took the pulp and shavings out of the back container and put them in my compost bin. I’m sure the vegetables and herbs out in my home garden will appreciate the rich compost that I’ll eventually bring to it.
The fresh juice helps me live a simpler life by bringing me that much closer to the blessings of the soil. As mentioned above, it helps me in my commitment to composting (diverting food scraps away from the waste stream), and because freshly made juice doesn’t come in big, bulky, plastic containers, I’m reducing the amount of plastic waste that I’m personally responsible for. Of course, these fresh fruit and veggie drinks are helping to boost my physical health as well. (By the way, I’m not a big vegetable eater, so the juicer will help me do what I know I need to be doing in that regard.)
As common as it sounds, fresh juice is helping me to live a simpler life.
