Faith in Action

Religion, Policy, Activism

When people ask, "what is the biggest mistake made in the Black Panther Party?" I tell them very clearly that what we did wrong was to take God out of the movement. -Afeni Shakur (Former Black Panther and Mother of slain rapper,Tupac Shakur)

Vote for Jack McClinton (Miami Hurricanes)

Just a few days ago I told you about Rudy Gay - one of the sons of our church who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA. Rudy is having a great year and his future is extremely bright.

However, Rudy isn’t the only young man from our church making great strides in the sport of basketball.

Jack McClinton plays for the Miami Hurricanes and is phenomenally gifted on the hardwood. The brotha got skills and almost on a weekly basis, Jack demonstrates why he’s one of the best collegiate players in the ACC and indeed the country.

Your church family is praying for you Rudy!

Rudy Gay, 2nd year NBA player with the Memphis Grizzlies holds a special place with me because he grew up as a member of my church - Shiloh Baptist Church.

He and his family are an integral part of Shiloh and it is really exciting seeing him continue to flourish and grow as a young man and as an NBA All-Star.

Well - Rudy is preparing for the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest on February 16th at the NBA All-Star game this year so if any of you want to help him find a dunk that will put him over the top…help ya self. He’s asking for people to demonstrate their dunk and upload it to youtube for him to review. He will duplicate the winning video’s dunk during this year’s Slam Dunk Contest. Check it out….

Go Rudy!

Anthony Brown & Answered Prayers CD Release

Anthony Brown & Answered Prayers

I’m writing with a request this time around.  My brother, Anthony J. Brown started a ministry back in 2000 called Answered Prayers.  For the past 6 years they have traveled a marvelous journey of growth and mind blowing opportunities.  Not too long ago they moved out to San Diego to work with Tonex with plans to one day release their own project.  Well, “one day” has come and Anthony Brown and Answered Prayers have released a Holiday CD.

The CD will be released on December 15, 2006, but you are able to pre-order your copy today.

I assure you that you will be pleased with your purchase and no doubt you will be blessed by what you hear.  I’ve always maintained that my younger brother is a musical genius and God has blessed him with gifts that are without question divine.

Click here to pre-order your copy of the CD.  To learn more about Anthony, Answered Prayers, and to hear a little bit of what they do you can visit their myspace page.  (There you can also hear their largely popular “Myspace Anthem”.)

SUPPORT MY BROTHER!  (please) and let me know what you think…

Death penalty isn’t the justice I seek
By Bonnita Spikes
      November 7, 2006

It was a moment of understanding that came in the midst of a heated argument among strangers in a courthouse hallway. The couple I was speaking with had likely been to the Maryland Court of Appeals more times than I. Her parents were murdered in their Baltimore home in 1983, and the man convicted of killing them still sits on death row. That day, the court was hearing an appeal in another death case: Maryland’s death penalty was being challenged based on disparities found in a state-commissioned University of Maryland study. The case being heard had implications for all on death row. The couple had waited more than two decades for an execution, and they were angry. The man had no patience for more appeals or for the death penalty opponents who had shown up that day.

I was surprised by my own candor. “My husband was murdered,” I injected into the conversation that I had thus far only observed, “and I still oppose the death penalty.”

His demeanor softened when I told him about my husband’s death. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You’re the only one in this building I will allow to talk to me about this. You can have an opinion. You’ve been there.”

My path to a more healthy diet

Healthy Dinner

My wife can throw down in the kitchen!  Homegirl can hang with the best of them and last week she cooked up this scrumptious and healthy meal after we both watched Oprah last week.  (I’m particularly proud of the big pile of leafy romaine lettuce - a food that I’ve not consistently eaten on purpose ever in my life!)  Oprah replayed a health show that she did with Dr. Oz some months back.

Now, I’ve already been trying to do better with what I eat since my path has crossed a wonderful coworker who I’ll call Dr. Vegan Momma.  She, of course, is vegan, but not one of those vegans who gross out non-vegans for the things that they eat.

Radio Show Tonight

Tonight I’ll be the guest host of a show called “Hey Young World” on WFBR 1590AM.  The owner of the station called me last week to see if I was interested in coming on to bless the mic for an hour.

This will be the first time since WEAA that I’ll be hosting a show on mainstream radio.

Heb on radioThe show is from 5-6pm.  For those in the Baltimore Metro area please tune in and participate on your way home from work.  I have some great interviews lined up and I’m going to see if I can drum up some callers for some two way talk action.

We’ll see if I still got it….

New Week / New Blog

Hello Family,

So I finally took the leap and moved my blog to WordPress.  There are strong differences between blogger and WordPress that I’ve come across since moving day (which was Friday).

In Blogger you have much more freedom to alter the template of your blog all you want.  In WordPress they give you limited options to alter your template based on the free template you choose.
