When people ask, "what is the biggest mistake made in the Black Panther Party?" I tell them very clearly that what we did wrong was to take God out of the movement. -Afeni Shakur (Former Black Panther and Mother of slain rapper,Tupac Shakur)

Sunday Sermon: Pastors John Wright and Marvis P. May

I’ve always been interested in how much pastors decide to get involved in local politics.  Some pastors choose to maintain public silence on political issues and others involve themselves extensively as the ones featured in this video.

Pastor John Wright (First Baptist Church of Guilford) and Pastor Marvis P. May (Macedonia Baptist Church) have a long record of being actively involved in the political arena.  Here they team up to give their support to Baltimore mayoral candidate, Keiffer Mitchell.  Widely believed to be the “white candidate” in the mayoral race, Mitchell obviously believes that he can gain some ground among Black voters by having Wright and May on his side.

The Sad Story of Compromised Leading Blacks in Baltimore

Sheila Dixon & Martin O’Malley

After a season of strategic separation, Martin O’Malley and Sheila Dixon are back together again - this time to help Sheila become the Mayor of Baltimore City.

Today, O’Malley and Kweisi Mfume (who also has been mysteriously absent from the public sphere since facing allegations of his involvement in the ouster of Tyrone Powers from the airwaves of 88.9FM in January) endorsed Sheila Dixon at the War Memorial Plaza downtown.

A large crowd of luminaries were on stage in support of Dixon and today’s endorsement including : Sen. Nathaniel McFadden, Sen. Catherine Pugh, Delegates Maggie McIntosh, Curt Anderson, Melvin Stukes, Cheryl Glenn, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings Blake, City Council Vice President Robert Curran, and even Dr. Frank Reid, pastor of Bethel AME Church.

Interestingly enough, Martin O’Malley called Dixon “a constant advocate for the best interest of the majority of the people of the city.”  However, that view is far from a consensus.  Creators of the accountability site: The Truth About Sheila Dixon, want to remind voters that Dixon has often looked out for her best interest and the interest of her “Boss”- Martin O’Malley.

Mitchell’s Dad Quits Campaign

Keiffer Mitchell

Hat Tip: WBAL Radio & The Associated Press

The father of City Council member Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. resigned as treasurer of his son’s mayoral campaign after it was discovered that he spent more than $40,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses, according to published reports.  State law bars such spending for personal expenses.

Dr. Keiffer J. Mitchell has reimbursed the money, the younger Mitchell’s campaign Thursday said in a statement to The Sun.

In one case, the elder Mitchell spent more than $14,000 to pay for his wife to stay at a hotel while she recovered from knee surgery, The Sun said, citing Mitchell campaign sources.

Some $19,000 in checks were made payable to cash or ended up with unknown persons. More money was spent on insurance and house repairs.
